Since the advent of carbon fiber in the 20th century, foreign carbon fiber technology has been strictly blocked in China, and the development of domestic carbon fiber industry technology has been difficult. After 2000, our country attached great importance to high-performance carbon fiber technology and provided strong top-down support, promoting the development of the domestic carbon fiber industry. Firstly, in terms of production capacity, the total domestic carbon fiber production capacity in 2020 is approximately 30,000 tons, and the total consumption is 38,000 tons; secondly, in terms of products, in the past 20 years, it has achieved full coverage of global conventional product specifications from “nothing”; thirdly in terms of industrial structure, carbon fiber industry clusters have taken shape in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and Bohai Rim regions, with a number of iconic companies and R&D institutions emerging. Generally speaking, the rapid development of the domestic carbon fiber industry has benefited from the long-term and orderly support of the state and the entry of social capital.
2021 is the first year of the 14th Five-Year Plan. In the "Action Plan to Accelerate the Development of Carbon Fiber Industry" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in October 2013, it was stated that the main problems currently existing in my country's carbon fiber industry are: compared with the international advanced level, my country's carbon fiber industry has weak technological innovation capabilities, imperfect process equipment.There are many problems such as unstable product performance, high production costs, low-level duplication of construction, low level of industrialization of high-end varieties, lagging standardization construction, and serious shortage of downstream application development. On the one hand, because Japanese and American companies strictly restrict the export of high-performance carbon fibers they produce to China, the export of general and complete sets of carbon fiber technologies must be specially approved by the government of the exporting country. Therefore, my country's high-performance carbon fibers have long been dependent on imports, and the supply and demand gap in the carbon fiber industry has reached 70%. On the other hand, our country's blind expansion of low-end carbon fiber products has led to overcapacity and insufficient research and development capabilities for high-end products, which has hindered the profitability of our country's carbon fiber companies. Breaking through high-end technology is an important way to narrow the international gap and is also the key to the development of our country's carbon fiber industry.
